IN THE SPOTLIGHT: A CHILD’S BEDROOM

A room that will need to change with your child
The next room we’re focusing on in our ‘In the Spotlight’ series is the child’s bedroom. This room will go through many changes as your child grows up and is a fabulous opportunity to be really creative and try out different design trends.
Soft furnishings are a great way to include pattern and colour in the room right from the early days. When your child is born and you’re planning a nursery, the first thing we recommend is fitting blackout blinds. This will enable the room to be darkened at any time of the day and it will help encourage your baby to sleep! Blackout blinds remain a useful addition in the bedroom as your child gets older and are more reluctant to go to bed, especially in lighter evenings during the summer months. Westcot House can create bespoke blinds in your chosen fabric to complement the theme of your room and we can source material from many designers including Andrew Martin, Susie Watson, Designers Guild and Villa Nova. We love the animal-inspired collection Holly Frean has designed for Andrew Martin. Her fabric designs are a fun option for nurseries but will be loved by your children as they grow up.
Older children may like to help with the creative process and share their own design ideas for their bedroom. Westcot House designed these beautiful curtains for a teenage cricket fan’s room. The finished space reflects his love of the sport while the colour palette remains in keeping with the muted tones used throughout the house. The red cricket ball handles on the cabinets are a great finishing detail and help to bring the whole room together. We also designed a comfy window seat and it’s now the perfect space for him to read, relax with friends or play games.
One growing interior trend is the use of mural wall wallpaper and this Dusky Amazon design from Villa Nova is perfect for a girl’s bedroom.

Colourful soft furnishings can complement patterned walls and help to create a sanctuary for teenagers and their friends. You may like to consider investing in bed linens, rugs and throws as your teenagers head into adulthood and we love these throws from Designer’s Guild.

Westcot House can create handmade soft furnishings for any room in your home including the child’s bedroom, from baby through to teenager. We created these personalised cushions using Ian Mankin and Romo fabrics for a nursery and we love that they will likely remain a treasured part of the child’s bedroom for years to come.
